About Us

Great Expeditions was founded in 2009 by Samuel McLennan. It’s a 100% privately owned and operated Tasmanian company that takes pride in delivering unique experiences. We really care about the people we take on tour – as much as we care about protecting Tasmania’s plants, animals and pristine environments.

All tours are high quality, flexible and generally only run with small groups. They are designed to give you as much of the great things in Tasmania that our generations of local knowledge can provide.

Each tour is undertaken by a local, professional guide who is very well rounded and really enjoys meeting new people whilst teaching and talking about all things Tasmanian – eg. history, environmental issues, local culture, forestry, food & beverages, living a healthy balanced life and a few wild stories that will widen your eyes.

Some tours can specialise in certain activities or interests – eg. golf, arts, surfing , bushwalking. Just look at each day tour page and you will see a list of activities found in that geographic area.

Samuel McLennan
The past three decades have seen Samuel in numerous global locations for work and play. He really enjoys learning and is passionate about keeping Tasmania a beautiful place and protecting it’s unique plants, animals and pristine environments.

He has completed a Science degree with Honours at the University of Tasmania and majored in Botany, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.

Whilst on tour you can sit back and relax in confidence that Samuel will drive you safely on Tasmanian roads. The Australian Army awarded Samuel with ‘Best Driver’ (2x, 4×4 and 6×6 vehicles), ‘Runner-up Best Driver’ (32tonne vehicles) and was employed as a driving instructor after finishing his term as an Infantry soldier. He was the personal driver for the Commanding Officer of the 8th/9th Australian Army Infantry Battallion.

Also awarded ‘Best at Physical Training’ and medically trained by the Australian Army, you can be certain that you are with a skilled, qualified and capable person whist in Tasmania.

At last count, Samuel has been employed in about 34 different jobs around the globe: acting, construction, sales, sailing, bartending, mechanical engineering, physical training, farming, fishing, computing, hospitality, event management,  transport & logistics, military etc etc!
