The dock consists of a rock-walled marina with an opening for boats. The bridge is normally closed, allowing pedestrian access around the dock. The dock is normally used by motor pleasure boats, yachts, and fishing boats serving the city’s fish market and restaurants, several of which are at the northern end of the dock.

We can also arrange to dive for fresh abalone if you are keen and cook it on the beach. The track leads down some steep steps through light bushland to the gorgeous cove with views across to the Iron Pot lighthouse. The cove is flanked by a large rock archway on one side and a fascinating fossil-filled wave-cut platform on the other – both can be safely explored at low tide. Our Unique Tour Of Strahan On Tasmania’s West Coast

Historically Strahan has been a port to a small fishing fleet that braves the west coast conditions and Hell’s Gates. It is the nearest inhabited locality to Cape Sorell and is literally the ‘gateway’ to the south-west wilderness – as boats, planes and helicopters utilise Strahan as their base when travelling into the region. We can organise a flight or a boat trip up the beautiful Franklin and Gordon river.

Strahan is the base for boat trips to Sarah Island, the notorious penal settlement that garnered the reputation as the harshest penal settlement in the Australian colonies, and the lower Gordon River.

It is the home of the Round Earth Theatre Company, which conducts explanatory tours of Sarah Island and also has produced a daily enactment/play about Sarah Island, The Ship That Never Was, which has exceeded 5000 performances and is Australia’s longest running play.
